royal issue 8

Royal 8 entitled Design in Conflict brings to you
the Collision of Culture and Capitalism which we have become known for.
This issue features: WESC, Brian Collins of Ogilvy + Mather, King Stampede, Mishka,
Le Messie of FALSE, and Yasuhiro Mihara of PUMA MIHARA .
Salute to the masses. Collisions, Culture and Capitalism abounds. This is by far the most ambitious launch we've ever undertaken. Two Back-to-Back Issue Drops / Over 400 Pages of content. Personally, I'm amazed that D.G and Myself were able to accomplish this herculean task. It stands as testament to the strength of The KDU. From MK Lane in Rome, to Mateo in Budapest, to Danimal in New Zealand, to Valp in Warsaw, to Le Messie in Singapore, to Von in London and to the myriad KDU Members scattered throughout the states I believe we've shown that our reach and relevance is truly global.

In this issue we take a look at the newest generation of Streetwear Brands making their mark and defining a new consumer market in the process. We spoke with: King Stampede, Mishka NYC, Leroy Jenkins, Mighty Healthy, Crooks N Castles, Spoonfed, Lushlife, Reason and others. We also bring you an in-depth conversation with Greger Hagelin / CEO of WESC WE are the Superlative Conspiracy, who just recently opened their SOHO store. From small start-up brands we go straight to Fortune 500 Companies with the works of Brian Collins, Director of the Brand Integration Group at Ogilvy + Mather. He's responsible for managing and defining some of the biggest brands in the world, i.e Coca-Cola, Kodak, Delta, Hershey's, Miller and more. All of that prime content is encased in a Foil printed Cover, front and back.

The Royal is first and foremost a Printed Cultural Artifact and should be seen and held in hand. I'd like to offer you a sneak peak at some of the outstanding artwork and spreads. I bring you this, The 8th Issue of The Royal: Design in Conflict. Devour and Enjoy.

house of syn

The Face of a Nation Flies at Full Mast .
The Nationalist and Patriot find common ground in the face of the Flag which flies above their homeland. I present you with a new interpretation of civility and faith; a re-working of the flag of the House of Saud. The calligraphic work is my interpretation of the Shahada or the Islamic declaration of faith, which reads: La Ilaha Ila Allah Muhammada Rasulu Allah . That translates to: There is no god but Allah; Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. My reworking reads differently but still professes a proud reverence for a Faux Theocratic State.

Alms for War .
This work will be presented as a False Flag in the upcoming Versus Show brought to you by TheKDU and Triple Five.

vicero type

A Bold New Face .
Visceral In Every Way .
Future Retro from the fashion houses of 70's Paris. An homage to the photography of Guy Bourdin. A new iteration of Firimin Didot's classic eponymic typeface, ripe for reinvention. As stylistically appropriate with the avant-garde fashion crowd as a Bag of that Kurtis and a Blade. This typeface lends an Air of Sophistication to any endeavor. Like a Milonga or Candombe for the typographically inclined, this tango sings of heart-break and revenge in one unrelenting breath. Could you Undersmell that Playbwoy ? Believe me when I say, Vicero is the new Didot.

la pax romana

A View of the Modern Roman Aesthetic .
et this not go unnoticed. Erasmus proclaims DULCE BELLUM INEXPERTIS / War is Beauty to those who have not experienced it . I have recently been meditating on the idea of Design in Conflict as put forth by my partner D. Gensler. It becomes obvious that Design has throughout history played an integral part in the proceedings of both War & Peace. At this point in time it seems as if Design has come into conflict with itself; fighting Gold Tooth & Manicured Nail for a sense of relevance. Does Form Follow Function, or do we all follow each other in a willing cycle from embellishment to minimalism and all points in between? Without doubt these questions weigh heavy on the hearts of many self-proclaimed aesthetes. I offer not a solution, but rather the initiation of a dialogue which may serve to illuminate a detour by which we might escape this cycle; or this may just lead us all back to where we started. Either way / Enjoy the Glory of it ALL.

Please Follow Through for a further sampling of this new Pax Romana
